"If you want to change the world, first change yourself."
I am a generic psychotherapist and counsellor based in Godney, near to Wells and Glastonbury and surrounding area.
I don't divide people into issues or problems and I am deeply interested in how we all find creative ways of living our lives, whatever our experience.
Research shows how psychotherapy provides long lasting relief from the kinds of deep distress that aren't helped by quick-fix types of treatment, because it actually creates permanent, profound changes in the way we think, feel and behave.
Psychotherapy really can change your life and your relationships with others. It can alleviate long term emotional pain and improve how we manage our lives.
Qualifications and experience
My training began with a Counselling Diploma in the 1980’s. I began training as Psychotherapist in 1991 with BCPC, (Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling), a respected organisation, providing a long in-depth training in a range of therapeutic disciplines.
I have more than 30 years experience of working in the NHS, Higher Education and private practice. I was employed as Senior Assessment Counsellor at the University of the West of England, where I also ran a Psychoanalytic group for men and women. In the NHS I worked for 10 years as the Psychotherapist and Counsellor for a GP Practice, where I set up and ran a Counselling Service to accommodate a large number of patients requiring psychological support. I have run two long term psychotherapy groups for women, both lasting over 10 years.
I have supervised psychotherapists counsellors and social workers, whilst they developed their own professional practices.
It can be difficult to understand the terms and to know how they differ. Generally psychotherapy is a more in depth and longer process which deals with long standing issues of unhappiness and a feeling of ‘stuckness’, preventing us from making changes and moving on in our lives. These are often related to issues and events that stem from our past. It provides a chance to examine our patterns of thinking and feeling which are preventing any change or improvements.
Counselling tends to be more of a short term project, dealing with more current issues, like loss of job, or partner, bereavement or changes in physical health.
I see young people, adults and couples. Common issues which people bring include
loss/bereavement
abuse
depression
adoption
sexuality
relationship issues
eating disorders
self harm
physical illness
mental health
childhood trauma
attachment disorders
When you begin your therapy we will start by discussing your needs and looking at how we can achieve your aims.
Working with me will improve your self knowledge and help you to find more pleasure and interest in yourself and your life. Understanding ourselves in this way enables us to make good decisions and fosters better relationships. Sometimes it seems that no one understands how we feel, and we can't always understand ourselves...
Working with a psychotherapist can help us to know what we feel; be able to put those feeling into words; and this makes it easier for us to communicate with other people in a more open and honest and productive way.
There is now a considerable body of research which demonstrates that psychotherapy is the way to create permanent changes in the ways that we think, feel and live.
Often we have lived with our difficulties for a very long time and can't imagine things getting better, but talking things over with a psychotherapist can really make a difference, and we can see a new way to live.
My fee for each 50 minute session is usually £70 for individuals and £80 for couples.
I usually recommend meeting once a week, during my work periods. Generally I take 4 - 6 weeks holiday each year, and will let you know well in advance. I expect you to pay for all other sessions. I do try to be flexible if you need to rearrange a session, but cannot always guarantee to be able to do so.
Sometimes, if you are not able to get to your session we can arrange for a telephone or email contact, which can also offer you additional support at times of need
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial assessment appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
I work from Godney, Nr Wells, near Glastonbury, Somerset.
